The Unique Student Identifier (USI) is a unique alphanumeric code assigned to each student involved in vocational education and training (VET) in Australia. It serves as a lifelong reference number that allows students to access their USI account and view their complete record of VET achievements from all registered training providers.

By linking a student’s USI to the National VET Data Collection, it enables easy access to a consolidated and verified transcript of completed training units and qualifications. This ensures that students’ learning histories are securely stored and readily accessible, even if records from individual providers are lost.

The USI is free of charge, can be created online, and remains valid for life. From 1 January 2015 onwards, it is mandatory for all students enrolling in nationally recognised VET courses to have a USI, ensuring accurate record-keeping and a seamless educational experience.
